THANK YOU OPPO - I didn't expect this post to be this popular but a lot of people have chimed in and it's really helped me feel better and well, avoided a mistake. Thanks again Opponauts and I hope one day I can repay you all!

Beers on me if you're ever in Montreal.

So long story short, same girl, reheated soup...should have listened to my friend not to reheat soup. Broke up again on Valentines day, got back together the day after and well this morning it all ended by her. Honestly, I've never seen such a brutal botchery of a break up. She dragged me to her brothers last night, then back to her parents house so I had to bring a ton of stuff, then this morning it ended I had to leave with her parents there and drudge through knee deep snow to get to a bus because they live in the suburbs, then the bus broke down and the doors were shut, the emergency window latches were frozen shut so we had to wait for a tow truck to to us indoors.

This time it's done for good but the way she did it was not right and the amount she has toyed with me isn't either. So why the topic?

Well, I have a horrible history of retail therapy after a break up. Two times ago I got a plasma tv, new desktop, monitors, smartphone and a dozen other things. Last time? A ton of clothes and a 2500$ Macbook Pro.

Kinja'd!!!

On Valentines day I ended up at a Cadillac dealer looking at getting on the phone list for preordering an ATS V sedan once it's available or outright purchasing a CTS V from across the country through them and having it shipped. Either option is just plain stupid as I live a 10 minute subway ride from work and a block away from anything else I need and well, I need your help to talk me out of it haha

TLDR: Life is sucking, I got stuck on a bus after being dumped at my ex gfs parents house in the morning with them there and now I'm at work trying to not head to the Caddy dealer again.

Edit: Thanks so much for the responses so far guys, it's really helping. Opponauts are awesome.

I just chipped my front tooth on my coffee mug at work ... realized she gave me the mug and now I have to call the dentist.. you've got to be kidding me. (Mug is now shattered on the floor in my office)

I sat in an ATS yesterday. It was really nice. I imagine with a stupidly powerful engine it would be a hoot.

I mean, uhhhh.... I hear that... um... no, I got nothing. Don't blow the money on the car.

Do you really want to put yourself into a several year long commitment because of a breakup? If you're worried about overspending, every time you have trouble making a payment or have to forgo something else to pay for the car you'll remember you only bought it because she broke up with you. So the car will be a constant low-grade reminder of a failed relationship.

Figure out what a month's payment would have been, and spend 2-3 months worth on some sort of vacation. Rent a fast car with no top and drive it somewhere warm. Fly to key west and party for a weekend, whatever.

That way you have a great experience, and you can pay it off in a few months, then you are free to go in whatever new direction your life takes you.

I would make a joke about retail therapy being a sign you're really a chick and that being related, but I think we've all been there to some degree. That being said, I think you're going about this wrong. "10 minute subway ride from work" and "block away" from anything else is a painful self-imposed limit on your horizons. Combine that with you having just experienced being stuck on a bus... I'd say at least look at getting something. Maybe not a Cad, that's a bit of a commitment, but the essence of having a car is the ability to just fuck off somewhere any time you feel like it. Closing yourself in is not so bueno.

Very true, and there's no end to this commitment. I'm going to look into a couple trips, I don't know why I didn't think about that but yea, last break up I was in a funk for over a year and a half and thenI went to Vegas .... and my life changed.

Thanks for the tip and you're right, it's not worth risking my perfect credit, savings and investments on trying to make myself feel better about her.

Haha, yea. I find guys do it just as much but tend to buy far bigger ticket items like cars, trucks, boats ... I had a friend who bought a plane and an island.

Maybe I should start to consider something for fun, just a cheap fun car. What's a downside here is winter tires are required by law and with the amount of snow and salt here cars last for a few years if they're not just summer cars. Maybe I'll see how much storage would be and a miata with some modifications.

do you have a car now?

even if you take a subway to work and walk mostly, having a car for emergency/enjoyment isn't a bad idea.

aaaaaannnnndddd... if the car is mostly for enjoyment/emergency/occasional errand, you aren't tethered to a boring econobox commuter.

sorry for not helping keep you out of the caddy dealer. but honestly, screw her. get a car. (if you can afford it currently. there's no reason to put yourself in a financially untenable situation over a girl.) i did the same after my last breakup. that was years and years ago. i now have one less crazy woman in my life and one more 996 in the garage.

Buy a CTS-V Wagon.
Live in it.
Drive around the country, track day to track day.

Sorry. You came to the wrong place.

//srs That all sucks, though. Even "easy" breakups are terrible, and rocky ones far worse. Hang with good friends instead of buying a car. Possessions might distract you from the feels, but they won't make you happy.

Meh...I wouldn't say life is sucking as much as it could be if you're in the position to get either a new ATS-V, or a CTS-V caddy.

I've had a dream career of mine pretty much smashed (wanted to do Naval flight, scored highly, was all set, turns out I have an exceptionally mild sleep apnea, any apnea restricts me), then my beloved MkV R32 got a hole put in it's transmission by a poorly maintained box truck. Liberty Mutual jerked me around getting it fixed, and then the garage did a terrible job. I was without my car for 6 months, and had it between the dealer and another garage. After getting it back, my CV boot got a small hole in it, had to replace that. Then found I needed brakes (not too big a deal just annoying). Then, the shop discovered one of the places that had my car royally fucked my steering rack, with gouges all over it like someone was prying at it. The shop went as far to say it was unsafe to drive, which is rich, considering I drove from Connecticut to Pittsburgh and back over the weekend (14 hrs) on it. Also, all the bolts on the trans were WAY over torqued, which who knows if it did anything else. This is also having to take my car back to the dealer due to the timing chain getting worn out. Besides that, I've recently had two fairly close friends just stop talking to me...rather out of the blue, and can't seem to find an explanation.

Anyway, now with the car stuff stacking up I've decided I just gotta get rid of it to try to avoid any other problems. With my meager salary means I'll be getting something that costs as much as I can sell my car for, which is looking like anything less than $12k. So, from a SUPER fun awd, vr6 having R32, to probably a used Honda fit or fiesta (not ST).

Oh, and I'm going to be moving back home, back in with my parents since I just cant get traction living here in CT with it's absurd cost of living.

So, things could be worse. I'd get the ATS-V just because it's new and shiny and the only boogers in it will be yours.

My general sense is that the V6 ones are a bit tight in the engine compartment, but by implication the Iron Duke ones have acres of space. In other respects, the brakes/wheel bearings/etc. things you might get into are quite straightforward. It also weighs very little, so jacking it up or putting it on ramps or stands wouldn't be hard.

Kinja'd!!!

Nothing too crazy. Leagues easier than, say, a Boxster, anyway.

Depends on what respect, I guess. It's a more finely tuned machine - the Japanese build quality likely counts for something, but I think you can pretty much fix a Fiero with junk parts and pliers 90% of the time. The big caution with the Fiero as I understand it is to make sure it can't overheat and make sure it can't set itself on fire - both very well-tread fixes in its community. Past that, probably golden. The Z, possibly better out of the box, but then something pricey McSplodes or the neighbor kid steals it.

He imports things from China, owns 1% of anything that's on a train in Canada, and has a number of other investments. He bought a BMW Z8 brand new after purposely totalling his previous 850CSi rear-ending someone for going to slow.

He plowed a guy's brand new M3 through his garage using an Escalade because he stole his parking space in his driveway. As you can see, he's got a bit too much money for brains.

Holy crap.

Cheap is relative. Under $20k maybe, with a $5k yearly allowance for modifications and/or track time?

FWIW, I'm infatuated with my E90 M3, but they haven't quite dropped that low yet.

They're not miraculously so, but they're basically two big solid steel subframes with a largely plastic body. There's not as much tissue paper steel as a lot of cars have, and the rockers aren't rust and moisture traps in quite the same way as many cars have exposed. In short, keep the wheel wells clean, and they do respectably well.

For sure. Also you'll have a CTS-V wagon and I mean who wouldn't enjoy one of those?

mmmm the e90 m3 is such a great car. I'd love to pick up a 2008 Alpina B6 but they're rare as can be. Perhaps a 6 series of the same era would be nice but I don't think it's cheap enough for a weekend summer car let alone maintenance is like a 7 series of the same area (I'd store a car I love here during winter).

I'll start looking in the 5K budget range just to see what's available in that range and work my self up.

I highly recommend it. Just take your time and make a good choice, and don't let emotion drive you to make a truly poor financial decision. I bought my dream car when I could really afford to do so, and ended up paying it off three years early. Absolutely zero regrets here. If you do it just right, that car may also never depreciate...

Haha, perhaps, but will I fit (6ft 3). I saw a yellow one in mint condition rally prepped on my way to the bus parked in the bus parking lot today.

Really? I didn't know that but that's insane! Would you say it's a good first car to learn how to work on your own cars with?

So true. It's not really about the car. It's about what the car does to you. The greatest day of my life still remains the time I got to hoon around on an abandoned road course in my WRX. I should have clarified that. I meant that the act of buying something, just to own it, doesn't really medicate very well.

Good luck on your hunt. It doesn't have to be fast or expensive, you just have to love it and the way it makes you feel when you're driving it.

Every time I see my car, I still think, "Damn, that's a fine machine. And it's mine..."

Thanks, I'm going to look into it and take my time with it as well. Thank you again, perhaps I should hold off and decide if I go back to school and avoid spending the money until afterwards.

Thank you! You've really helped me out from doing something stupid, taking a loan out and purchasing a new caddy that will drop value so quickly. I'll start hunting slowly

My pleasure. Waiting is never a bad idea, just don't wait forever (I was 34 when I finally pulled the trigger on my M3 - I had a Mazda 3s MT hatch for seven years before that). Don't forget that the hunt is half the fun! I'd drive absolutely every car that you're halfway interested in and that is within your budget before deciding on something.

I guess I still may have a long road before purchase my dream car. I'm 25 and somewhat successful but it doesn't hurt to spend 82$ a month on a public transit pass and bank away hundreds that I'd spend on loans instead.

Haha, the hunt really is! I'm going to definitely do that and might start soon, why not? Even if I'm not set on buying yet, it won't hurt to get some better ideas.

I bus to work and live in a walkable neighborhood. My thought on getting a car is all about roadtrip and fun weekend. Yes, renting a car probably will come out ahead if I don't take roadtrip more than 20 times a year. But also getting a slightly higher mileage used car can fit your bill if you can find one below market value.

I am not doing a good job to talking you out of this, am I?

I want a sportbike so badly but by the time I get my license, it'll cost me about 10 grand here in Quebec. It's insane. I also have no friends to ride with :(

Wagons to pick up the girls? haha I hope I find one that loves them. I'm 25 but I'm often mistaken for older and having kids, apparently liking wagons doesnt help haha.

Haha, no, but this is something I've thought about before. I actually just upgraded my credit card so I don't get dinged on rental insurance anymore, no idea why I hadn't before but it would be a lot more fun in your own car. It will hold memories.
